The racial bias within the system and the legal revoking of rights from felons work in tandem to create a carefully concealed racial caste system. Under the guise of a fight against drug epidemics, the system is actually capable of creating legal and societal barriers which often last a lifetime and can be impossible to overcome for the black Americans being targeted.
Certainly, the lifelong effects of being a convicted felon are well-known, but people often overlook some of its effects. As more minorities are convicted and labeled felons, society begins to look down on a larger proportion of minorities than white Americans. Ultimately, this can create a feedback loop. As more minorities are incarcerated, more people begin to believe that the large proportion is caused by an equally large ratio in terms of crimes committed by minorities compared to white Americans. Clearly the effects of racial bias in the justice system are more than just the legal and physical effects. Kelly, would you be able to expand on some of the societal effects that saying “all lives matter” has?
Absolutely. Obviously, many people can observe firsthand the effects of racism in America by witnessing the sort of thing Michelle saw when she left that election party. What a lot of people don’t notice as much is the effects of their word choice on the movement. In response to the phrase “Black Lives Matter”, certain groups amassed and created their own phrase: “All Lives Matter”.
