In Mississippi specifically, parolees are unable to vote. Being labeled a felon also provides a legal grounds for employers to deny people jobs and it gives societal grounds for distrust.
Another issue with the justice system is the lack of justice for the black Americans killed in certain incidents. The BLM movement really began when George Zimmerman shot and killed Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teen. The case went to trial and Zimmerman was acquitted of all charges, sparking the birth of the hashtag “Black Lives Matter” on Twitter. The justice system does not hold the people unjustifiably killing black Americans accountable for their actions.
It’s interesting how both of your work overlaps so heavily despite Michelle focusing on the systemic side of racism while Kelly focuses on the societal side of racism. Can we discuss, outside of just the evidence for your arguments, some of the effects of the ideas both of you are trying to fight against?
I already touched a little on the effects of the racial bias in the justice system, but I haven’t entirely covered the widespread effects.
