Well said, Michelle. As I mentioned before, the BLM movement was revived largely because of the death of George Floyd. Floyd was a victim of police brutality and was preceded and followed by an unfortunate number of unwarranted deaths of black Americans by police officers. Police shoot and kill black Americans at two and a half times the rate of white Americans. Police brutality constitutes a large part of the conversation of racism, and rightfully so.
Actually, I was witness to the cruelty of police towards black Americans on my way out of an election night party when I saw a black man handcuffed and on his knees while several police officers stood around talking and joking. Ironically, that election night party was to celebrate the election of Barack Obama. For many Americans, especially minority Americans, that night marked a huge triumph against racism in the United States, but I was reminded of how much progress there is left to make the moment I left that party.
It’s unfortunate that so many people watching this right now can probably relate to your story. I know you both touched on the justice system’s racial bias a little; is there anything further you’d like to say about it?
As a whole, the justice system is far more than just “racially biased”. While it is irrefutably true that the justice system unfairly targets black Americans, there are several mostly unknown effects of this targeting. After losing months or years of their lives behind bars, black Americans who are unfairly punished for crimes many white Americans can get away with committing, these people who are now labeled felons lose many of their fundamental rights for the remainder of their lives.
