So, as I mentioned before our guests came out, both Michelle and Kelly are focusing on some of the lesser-known issues regarding racism in America. One common conversation in the discussion of racism is the place of crime rates among races, police brutality, and the role of the justice system in racism within America. How do you both address these issues?
Well, crime rates aside, incarceration rates for similar crimes are certainly a cause for concern. According to the NAACP, African Americans are incarcerated at six time the rate of white Americans for drug crimes. Clearly, there is some level of racial bias in the incarceration of black Americans.
Absolutely right. Some people argue that the incarceration rate and unusually high proportion of black Americans in prison can be attributed to different crime rates but the truth is that people of all colors use and sell illegal drugs at remarkably similar rates. Including differences in crime rates between races does not come close to accounting for the differences in incarceration rates, especially for drug crimes.
