ionic and covalent bonds. by aly14 on 04-03-2011
What is the differnece between ionic and covalent bonds?
Well, ionic bonds are where electrons are transferred to another atom, and Covalent bonds are when electrons are shared between two elements
Very good. Now give me some examples of both.
Well say you have the elements Hydrogen and Chlorine and they are organized like so (H:Cl), in this example the colon represents the transferring of electrons ( an ionic bond)
Okay, now that you've given an example of an ionic bond. How about you give me an example of a covalent bond.
Well, in a covalent bond as i said before, bonds are shared between two elements so a covalent bond can be represented by this ( H-Cl) In this example the dash represents the sharing that occurs in this bond.
