The Constitutional Convention 2 by matthewtoth on 10-17-2010
Washington elected to lead- It was May 25, 1787 when George Washington was unanimously selected as the presiding officer. Although the presence of George Washington was a factor, it was still hard to keep convention on track. There was a possibility that the country would fall apart if the convention was not focused.
How is your day going so far?
Fine. How are your kids?
Secrecy agreement- All of the people that took place in the convention had to keep the discussions a secret. If someone recorded what they said, in the newspapers, the delegates would be scared to change their opinion or consider factors of other people. While they were in the State House, the windows and doors were to be closed, no notes were to be removed, and conversations about the meeting were to be kept in the State House.
You better keep those notes in the State House or you're going to get in trouble.
I'm going to put them back right now.
Virginia plan- Delegates voted to not revise the Articles of Confederation because it was so weak, but a very little amount of delegates had ideas about how to make a new government. Although this was true, Virginia’s James Madison had thought up of a plan that included having three branches of government; executive, legislative and judicial. The legislative branch would be made up of the House of Representatives and a Senate. In which, people would directly elect the House of Representatives and they would elect the Senate. The number a Representatives and Senates would be based on population of the state. Madison's proposal called for a strong national government instead of alliance with states. Delegates thought that Madison's plan was to powerful. Small states thought that it was to radical.
Don't you think Madison's plan is great!
No, It is unfair and benefits larger states.
