Hitch vs Rich: Doves and Serpents in Athens by MirWriter on 04-01-2023
Hey, Rich, it's so cool to visit the place where Paul gave his big "unknown god" speech, huh?
Yes, Hitch. A gorgeous bit of preaching. He respected the culture and he was clever enough to use the tools available that the listeners could relate to. Paul was no slouch.
All that idolatry, though. He should have preached brimstone and sulfur on them. I mean, right up there, a giant statue of a pagan goddess. Pretty satanic, don't you think?
Wisdom considers the context. Even Jesus said be "gentle as doves" but "cunning as serpents." Paul was both gentle and cunning. Brimstone and sulfur would have likely got him attacked or ignored.
Doves are wimpy.
The meek shall inherit, after all, Hitch. And the meek can avoid having their heads bashed in by an angry crowd with rocks. Lots of big rocks here in the Areopagus. How about another blood orange and strawberry smoothie?
