After suffering a shoulder injury in Afghanistan in 1881, the (as of yet unidentified) narrator is sent home to recover. The narrator meets a potential housemate in London through a mutual friend. When they first meet, the man surprises the narrator by inferring that he is a soldier who has just returned from Afghanistan. They are in the chemistry lab of St. Bartholomew's Hospital. The narrator warns the man. |

The man replied humorously. |

| "I also snores in my sleep, I am easily bored, selfish, and sometimes uses the mantle for target practice." | |

The two move into an apartment in Baker Street, where the narrator is fascinated by his flat mate's constant stream of strange visitors. |
