| Michelle, Kelly, glad you could both make it tonight. For those of you who don’t know, Michelle Alexander is the author of The New Jim Crow, which focuses on the justice system essentially serving as a replacement for the Jim Crow Laws of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Kelly Coryell wrote an essay titled All Words Matter, which focuses on the harm of replacing “Black Lives Matter” with “All Lives Matter”. Her essay was nominated for the Norton Writer’s Prize. To kick off the discussion, I’d like to ask what provoked you to address these lesser-known aspects of racism in the United States. |

| Thank you, Kelly. For me, it took years for me to finally come to the conclusion that the justice system is a modern racial caste system. Like many Americans, I was long under the impression that the justice system is racially biased, but not necessarily to the magnitude that it really is. | |
