Welcome back to Briley’s Broadcast of Better Opinions. Ladies and gentlemen, for tonight’s episode of BBBO, we have two very special guests who have come here to discuss one of the most-prevailing issues of today: racism in the United States. Specifically, I hope that our discussion tonight can touch on some lesser-known aspects of this issue. Without further delay, please welcome Michelle Alexander and Kelly Coryell.
Michelle, Kelly, glad you could both make it tonight. For those of you who don’t know, Michelle Alexander is the author of The New Jim Crow, which focuses on the justice system essentially serving as a replacement for the Jim Crow Laws of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Kelly Coryell wrote an essay titled All Words Matter, which focuses on the harm of replacing “Black Lives Matter” with “All Lives Matter”. Her essay was nominated for the Norton Writer’s Prize. To kick off the discussion, I’d like to ask what provoked you to address these lesser-known aspects of racism in the United States.
Go ahead, Michelle.
Thank you, Kelly. For me, it took years for me to finally come to the conclusion that the justice system is a modern racial caste system. Like many Americans, I was long under the impression that the justice system is racially biased, but not necessarily to the magnitude that it really is.
