Immigration in the United States. by almaramos on 04-02-2020
Conversation between immigration historians.
What is now modern America was once based on immigration. This is how the nation started and became into how we know it today. It is fascinating how long it took for the government to start regulating immigration in the United States.
Indeed. It actually started in 1882 with the Immigration Act. The only people who were not allowed into the country were the ones who were convicts, "idiots", and people who could not care for themselves. Nowadays, there is such a thing as a "green card Lottery", and if you are only suspected to be a criminal, you are not allowed in the country.

Yes that is true. A lot has changed throughout the years. In fact I think the time in which we saw a major change in immigration was after 9/11. I believe it was for the best and for everyones safety.
Yes it was. In fact, the hijackers had legally obtained a visa. So now the government has to be a lot more careful who they let into the country. One of the most well known changes was the expansion of law enforcement to search, monitor, detain, and remove suspected terrorists.

Yes, theres have been many changes on the immigration system since then. I think even a lot more will change with incoming new administrations. I think the new opportunities for hardworking immmigrant to come into this country are drastically decreasing as the years pass.
Yes, and unfortunately there is no way to know the true intentions of incoming immigrants so it is important that we make sure we look into every person's background throughly. This is important to prevent anything similar to 9/11 to ever happen again.
