The Constitution creatws the framework for the federa court system in Article 3.
The Constitution said that the Supreme Court will have the most power.
It didn't however, specify how the lower courts shall be set up.
The Judiciary Act was set up in 1789 which created the District Court and the Court of Appeals.
Each state has at least one District Court, and the District Court is the first to hear cases.
There are 12 Court of Appeals in the United States. They have no jury or witnesses. The judges decide either to affirm the lower court's decision or to reverse it.
The Supreme Court is the highest court in the federal court system. The purpose of the Supreme Court is to serve as the final court of appeals for both the state and federal court systems.
