| Utterson followed Poole to the back of the house. He had never been into Dr Jekyll's laboratory before. It had no wimdows. Light came from gas lamps in the ceiling. There were shelves around the walls with bottles of chemicals on them. The chemicals were many different colours, There was a large wooden table in the middle of the laboratory. | |

| Dr Jekyll was sitting behind the table.His face was pele. He looked ill. In front of him was a tall chemical apparatus made of glass. There were glass tubes which went into jars. There was a flame burning under one of the tubes. Green liquid was boiling in this tube, Dr Jekyll was examining the green liquid that dripped from the apparatus into a bottle. | |
