Commas
Did you know that you use commas to separate adjectives of equal rank? Or that you don’t use commas to separate adjectives that must stay in a specific order? Or that you use commas to set off parenthetical & nonessential expressions?
Oh? Did you know that when a geographical name is made up of two or more parts, you use a comma after each item? Or that when a name is followed by 1+ title, you use a comma after the name and each title? Or that you use a comma to indicate the words left out of an elliptical sentence? Or that you use commas to set off a direct quotation from the rest of the sentence?
Semicolons and Commas
Did you know that you use a semicolon to join independent clauses that are not already joined by conjunctions? Or that you use a semicolon to join independent clauses separated by either a conjunctive adverb or transitional expression?
Oh? Did you know that you use a colon to introduce a quotation that is formal/lengthy, or is a quotation without “he/she said”? Or that you use a colon to introduce a formal appositive that follows and independent clause?
Quotation Marks with Direct Questions
Did you know that you always place a semi/colon outside the final quotation mark? Or that you place a question/exclamation mark inside the final quotation mark if the end mark isn’t part of the quotation? Or that you use single quotation marks for a quotation within a quotation? Or that you underline the titles of long written works and publications that are published as a single work?
Did you know that you underline the titles of movies, television, radio series, lengthy works / music, paintings, and sculpture? Or that you underline individual air, sea, space, and land craft names? Or that you underline words you wish to stress? Or that you use quotation marks around the titles of short written works and episode titles? Or that you don’t underline or place quotes around the name of the Bible, the name of the Holy Scriptures, government charter titles, alliances, treaties, etc?
