We stopped about twenty feet from the shoreline. The old man busied himself with a bobber and a piece of wire leader.

Twenty yards. I could've done it. I could've jumped and started swimming for my life.

I saw my own history flash by. I saw a seven year-old boy in a white cowboy hat and a Lone Ranger mask and a pair of bolstered six-shooters.
