The Engaging Language Activities by DMLebel on 03-05-2014
Question 1 Parts 1, 2, and 3
Hey Ronda, did you ever have a college course that had an activity that you can't ever forget? What made it memorable? Did it involve different learning styles or senses?
Well Cole, I did have an English 101 class in my first year of college. She had us write essays and read stories that were all interesting and relative to us. Explanatory essays that she had us write were instructions to do something that we could teach the rest of the class. We could bring props to help us illustrate the instructions and the class could follow along if we brought materials for them.
Question 2 Parts 1 and 2
I see it had you use your ears and hands. Was there a lesson you taught or observed recently that included an activity that would be memorable for the students?
I observed a lesson in which the teacher was teaching her students about multiple meanings*. She used a word map to illustrate the meanings of the word draw and had the students do the same with the same word on vocabulary picture cards, but without the bubble map*.
Question 2 Part 3, Question 3
That could have been more memorable and engaging if the teacher would have turned it into a game in which the students were actually making the motions of the different meanings of the word draw. It could be related with Write-Read-Play Simon Says in which the students are in groups and writing/doing Simon Says directions while using props. This incorporates hands-on activity, listening, and speaking with writing. So explain to me why it is important to link practice and application activities to the learning objectives.
It is really important to tie those two together because the students will be able to retain the information better and longer. That Write-Read-Play Simon Says game is a perfect example because it incorporates manipulatives and movement* through a hands-on game*. Manipulating learning materials is important helps English learners connect abstract concepts with concrete experiences*. The abstract concept multiple meanings is connected with word draw meaning to pick a card, draw a toy from the box, or draw a heart on the board by having the students actually write and do the actions with the actual materials.
