This is Tom White reporting for WSOK news 10.As many of you may have already heard the city of Savannah has issued a hurricane evacuation alert. There are some things that you will need to do in order to be prepared for this storm.
Hurricane Safety Tips
Here are some common tips provided by the white house to prepare before the storm arrives. To begin preparing, you should build an emergency kit and make a family communications plan. Learn community hurricane evacuation routes and how to find higher ground. Determine where you would go and how you would get there if you needed to evacuate. Cover all of your home’s windows. Permanent storm shutters offer the best protection for windows. A second option is to board up windows with 5/8” marine plywood, cut to fit and ready to install. Tape does not prevent windows from breaking. Install straps or additional clips to securely fasten your roof to the frame structure. This will reduce roof damage. Plan to bring in all outdoor furniture, decorations, garbage cans and anything else that is not tied down. If in a high-rise building, be prepared to take shelter on or below the 10th floor.
Proper Evacuation Procedure
When you evecuate there are also some other steps needed to have a concrete exit strategy. Of course you want to have enough cash on hand so that you can pay for whatever you need.Have multiple escape routes and know the proper government evacuation route. Make sure you car's fuel tank is filled and your mobile phone is charged. Identify ahead of time where you could go if told to evacuate. Choose several places, like a friend's home in another town, a motel or a shelter.Assemble a disaster supplies kit including the following items: First-aid kit and any essential medications. Canned food and can opener. At least three gallons of water per person. Protective clothing, rainwear and bedding or sleeping bags. Battery-powered radio, flashlight and extra batteries.
