Conflict in Northern Peru by ctpwd6 on 11-02-2011
LOCATION: Remote Northern Peruvian Amazon DATE: June 6th, 2009
We will not stop protesting until Peru repeals the legislative decrees issued last year that brought Peru into compliance with the U.S.-Peru Free Trade Agreement!
We will stand here blocking the roads and waterways of the Amazon for as long as it takes!
If you indigenous people don't move out of the way, the 600 of us have orders to open fire and murder you!
That doesn't seem reasonable! All we want is for you to know that we think that the decrees will allow deforestation and privatization of our traditional lands and natural resources! We are protesting non-violently, plus there are women and children present! There is no reason for you to open fire...
After 25 civilians confirmed dead, 9 police officers confirmed dead, and over 100 civilians wounded.
We the government have decided to suspend civil rights and introduce a curfew for the indigenous people. We will also send police into houses to arrest more indigenous people.
