Cell Cycle Comic by sprytequeen on 04-02-2009
We enter as a news reporter interviews scientist Gary J. Gorbsky.
Mr. Gorbsky you were discovered for your famous break through with cell division. That's part of the cell cycle right?
Yes cell division occurs during the cell cycle.
How would you explain in simplest terms the cell cycle?
I would go back to middle schol and say it like this: The first part of the cell cycle is called interphase. In interphase there is Gap 1 where the cell begins to duplicate the chromosones. Then in Synthesis the cell checks to make sure that it has doubled the chromosomes . This creates sister chromaitds. Then finally there is Gap 2 where the cell duplicates its DNA.
Wow that sounds pretty basic. Anything else?
Actually yes. After interphase comes mitosis. Mitosis is made up of four phases that are prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telephase. In prophase the nuclear membrane breaks down and the sister chromatids condense. Then in metaphase the chromosones line up in the middle of the cell. The chromosomes are moved here by spindle fibers that cme from the centrioles that are now at the opposite poles of the cell. The spindle fibers atach to the centromeres of the sister chromatid. Next comes anaphase where the spindle fibers pull the chromosome to oppisite ends of the cell.
