Homer The Great Poet. by jazzissk8er on 06-29-2008
Have you ever heard of the Greek poet, Homer? He wrote about a strong warrior Achilles in Iliad. In The Odyssey he wrote about Odysseus outwitting his enemies.
Yes, I have heard of him. He lived in either Chios or Smyrna. He was also blind, and worked as a storyteller and court singer in the 12th century BCE. Which is most interesting considering how the Greeks were preliterate.
Exactly and archaeologist found the writings, and believe they were written in the 8th or 9th century BCE. Meaning he either lived in a different time period or someone wrote it later and gave him the credit.
HAHA! Well that credit has influenced William Shakespeare and James Joyce, and was used like The Bible today.
But don't people argue that he wrote one but not the other since The Odyssey and Iliad have a different style and language?
Yes, but a literature critic, Longinus, said it could simply be the difference in his maturity. He might have written Iliad when he was younger and invincible. Then he wrote about smart Odysseus when he was older and wiser.
