Although the spleen is not essential for life, following splenectomy, a person may be more susceptible to potent pathogens and the effects of hemorrhage.
Let's not forget the thymus. The thymus is a bilobed gland located above the heart and its size decreases with age.
Ho-Hum.
It is the site of T cell maturation and secretes the hormone thymosin, which stimulates maturation of T cells.
Thymosin promotes the differentiation and division of T cells, which makes them immunocompetent, that is, capable of recognizing and attacking foreign antigens.
Tune in next time when Jo and John Ray discuss the lymphatic vessels on their anniversary. No animals were harmed in the production of this comic except probably a very mischievous kiwi.
