Lactic Acid Fermentation by mhoyosro on 06-22-2022
We could say that human civilizations has been focused in obtaining or producing fuels under various conditions, shaping our societies along the Eons.
You know, multiple cell types along the tree of life are playing the same game.
I don't understand you. I mean that humans have developed the lumber, mining, oil, or fracking industries to release the energy contained in the covalent bonds of Carbon. Human technology is incomparable!
Well, the fuel used by the cell is Adenosine Triphosphate which releases the energy contained in the covalent bond of its phosphate groups under hydrolysis. The production of this fuel is one of the features conditioning the evolution of cells and of Life itself.
In fact, the cell has evolved different ways of mining this fuel. Glycolysis is the best known. But few people know that cells also get ATP from fermentation.
Wow! Fermentation is way interesting from an anthropological point of view because it is now considered as a necessary technology in the foundation of civilizations. Tell me more about fermentation.
