The Byzantine Empire had political and religious disagreements with the Pope in Rome in 1054. The separation from Rome was called The Great Schism or the East/West Schism
The Byzantine Empire developed a new church; the Eastern Orthodox Church
Caesaropapism
The Byzantines attempted to rule through ‘caesaropapism’
Caesaropapism failed because of political rules and religious rules were opposite of each other. It was hard to be forgiving and kind emperor when dealing with rebels or invaders, etc.
