Oliver Twist Chapter 14 by bmart13 on 04-11-2021
One day, Mr. Brownlow invited Oliver to the study room to talk. Oliver and Mr. Brownlow had been speaking of reading when Mr. Brownlow turned the tone serious.
Now, I want you to pay great attention, my boy, to what I am going to say. I shall talk to you without any reserve; because I am sure you are well able to understand me, as many older persons would be.
Oh, don't tell me you are going to send me away, sir, pray! Don't turn me out of door to wander the streets again, Let me stay here, and be a servent. Don't send me back to the wretched place I came from.
Mr. Brownlow assured Oliver that he was a friend soon after. Suddenly, an old gentlemen came out who turned out to be Mr. Bumble, an old friend of Mr. Brownlow. Mr. Brownlow asked Oliver if he will be here and Oliver answered hesitantly which Mr. Bumble noticed.
I'll tell you what, he won't come up to you tomorrow morning. I saw him hesitate. He is deceiving you, my good friend.
I swear he is not. I'll answer for that boy's truth with my life!
Mrs. Bedwin was on the way to take some books to a keeper until Mr. Brownlow saw his opportunity to prove Oliver is reliable.
Send Oliver with them, he will be sure to deliver them safely, you know.
Yes; do let me take them, if you please, sir.
