Mama Nosotros Somos Migrantes by miriamegutierrez on 03-12-2020
"I don't want to go"
Mija, we have to go home and prepare for our long trip. It's that time of the year again and we can't be late, there are many families getting ready as well. You know you will have to miss the rest of the school year and won't be back until the next one, but don't worry we will have so much fun on the fields. This year you even get to help pick up crops just like the rest of your brothers. At first it may seem hard but you'll get the hand of it. Come on, let's go home and get ready, tu papa y hermanos nos esperan.
Why can't I stay here like the rest of the kids and finish school. You're lying it is not fun where we go all you guys do is work all day and once you finish we go home and sleep then in the morning the cycle begins. I want to stay in school with my friends maybe go to the park and play, but why should I have to go and help? Also, it is too hot mom and we never have enough water or food throughout the day. No, I don't want to go. Please let me stay, or better we should just skip this year so you guys could take a break. Yes, that sounds better we all stay and enjoy our time here, please.
Migrant Workers
Good afternoon, we are here with a migrant worker who will be telling us his story of what he has had to endure in the fields. Fist of all could you tell us how many years have you been a migrant worker? What made you become one? What memories good or bad do you recall that came out of being a migrant worker? In what conditions did you guys have to work and was it worth it? Lastly, what hopes do you have for the future?
Yes, well I have been a migrant worker since I could recall. My parents were migrant workers so I guess I just followed that. School for me was hard, having to be moving a lot and rarely being there made it hard to learn so we decided to just stop going. There were many bad memories but the worst one growing up was the stares that we would get from the people. I just didn't understand why we couldn't go to regular places without something being said about us, I guess I understand it now. Of course, it was not worth it. The amount of work for the money that we got was horrible. We endured very harsh conditions sometimes having to work in the rain but that still didn't mean more money. I just hope that the future is not like this and that my kids could have a better chance at succeeding one that I didn't.
Migrant Workers
