Signs of Our Times by RV_Cartoon on 09-15-2019
Hindi Diwas: Amit Shah says Hindi can unify nation. Many disagree.
Here we are, with another divisive, entirely avoidable controversy. Do the people in Delhi have any understanding of India south of Vindhyas? Does a language bring unity to the country, or does a shared identity based on civilization ethos?
I am surprised to hear you say that. Forget about unity. Should we not have an Indian link language? Does Hindi not meet the majority requirement? Should we continue to rely on a foreign language for communication?
Does technology provide a solution to India's seemingly intractable problems?
In the pre-computer era of printed forms, it was imperative to have a national link language for central business, meth by Hindi and English. Today you can translate HTML pages with a click. I see no reason why we cannot have official forms in every language of India...
True enough! And with machine-learning software, near real-time translations too are possible, allowing multi-language audio interactions. The government should invest heavily in these to provide unique solutions for India's Sprachbund.
One nation, equal laws for all with equal respect for all Indic languages.
Classical languages of India are pretty ancient, as are ancestral dialects of modern Hindi that are derived from Prakrit. It makes no sense to promote one language at the risk of alienating others, as each are incredibly rich and important repositories of culture, history and learning.
The govt should acknowledge the importance of every Indian language and make strong efforts to nurture and popularize each, while creating technology-based bridges beween the various languages. The 3-lang formula should be followed rigorously all over India to promote integration.
