Hydrothermal Vents by 8398784 on 02-07-2019
Hey! Did you know that the depth of Hydrothrmal vents ranges from 2000 meters to 7700 meters and the temperatures can reach 400 degrees celsius or 750 degrees fahrenheit.
I did know this, did you know that a hydrothermal vent 2500 meters deep experiences 250 atmospheres of pressure and because of the high pressure, the vents don't boil.
I wonder how they were discovered and who exlored them first.
In 1977, an expedition called the Alvin expedition occured and a team of scientists brought the Alvin to explore and they discovered the hydrothermal ventsaround the Galapagos Islands.
Organisms that live around the hydrothermal vents don't rely on sunlight and photosynthesis. Instead, bacteria and archae use the process chemosythesis to convert minerals and other chemicals in the water into energy.
What even lives down there?
From my knowledge, octopus, crabs, tubeworms, bacteria, shrimp, mussels, shrimp, microbes, etc.
