Biological Model of Abnormality by leahj on 01-25-2019
John is meeting with his therapist, Dr. Smith, to discuss his struggles with severe depression.
Hi John. How have you been since our last appointment?
Hi Dr. Smith. I have not been the best. I constantly feel hopeless and down, it is an extreme difficulty to get up every morning, and I have called in sick to work so many days that I am at risk of being terminated. I just don't understand why I feel this way.
Dr. Smith explains to John some biological abnormalities that could be causing his severe depression.
I'm truly sorry to hear that, John. There could be some neurological problems that are causing your depression. In simple terms, your brain is incorrectly passing on information along your neurons. When this happens, an abnormal amount of a neurotransmitter is released. In the case of patients with depression, the neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine are low.
Wow, that is a lot of information, but it helps me understand my condition better.
Dr. Smith is adding his concluding thoughts regarding the information he just told John.
I am using the Biological Model of Abnormality to explain that root cause of your depression. I hope we can keep having these sessions and that they help you improve and get back to feeling normal.
Thank you, Dr. Smith.
