| The latest scandal in the city is the state of disrepair of the beautiful Eiffel Tower. A group of activists have been trying to (cajole) the government through persuasive letters and begging, to (bolster) and strengthen the Tower's supports. | |

| The (caustic) decay of acid rain and pollution has rendered the tower "structurally unsound" so the activists say. The city government has responded saying the decay is (benign) and should not be worried about. All we can hope is that the Tower stands for many years to come. | |
