How To Identify Protons, Neutrons, and Electrons by hazel8790 on 01-21-2016
During a city party Amanda(left) runs into her old friend from college, Veronica(right), who is a scientist now. Amanda is telling Veronica how she is trying to her son with his science homework.
Veronica do you think you could remind me again of what I need to do in order to figure out the protons, neutrons, and electrons in an element ?
Of course! In order to determine the amount of protons, you must look at the elements atomic number. The elements atomoic number is how many protons it has.
Amanda's memory from her years in middle schol are coming back. She is now starting to remember how to identify protons, neutrons, and electrons.
Right! I think I'm remembering now. So the number of protons is the atomic number is the number of how many protons there are in the element. Which means, the same number of prtons is also the same number of electrons.
Yes, that's correct... Do you remember how to identify the number of neutrons in an element? Or do you need help with that as well?
I actually don't remember how to find the number of neutrons in an element. Would you mind helping me again?
Not at all! All you need to do to find the amount of neutrons in an element would be to subtract the atomic mass and atomic number and boom! You have your answer. However, make sure to round the atomic mass if it has a decimal.
