The Path to the Constitution by ttms on 10-06-2015
In January 1776...
I am a member of the Second Continental Congress and have just finished writing New Hampshire's state constitution. I must bring it to you for approval.
I sure hope this guy made a decent state legislature. He better have included a bicameral system with an elected governor to carry out the laws and a court system to enforce them, as well as a bill of individual rights for citizens. Otherwise, I'm ripping my hair out!
One year later...
Oh hey! Nice to see you again. You know, I'm so thrilled the Second Continental Congress is having this meeting for the confederation of the states because we are losing this war against Britain due to our lack of a single, strong army under central control.
I completely agree. In fact, I have the vision outlined in this notebook. The game plan is to solve these problems if the states ratify the Articles of Confederation. These articles will establish a one-house legislature called the Confederation Congress.
In the year 1785, the Continental Congress passed the Ordinance of 1785, which established a system for measuring and dividing up land to help people settle the Northwest Territory in a structured manner, since only a few settlers lived there during the American Revolution.
You are correct. The Ordinance of 1785 sets up a system survey the land. Townships six miles square are further divided into 36 one-mile-square sections.
Hello, John. I am looking to buy some land in this great Ohio territory but I am aware that there has been a law change in how to purchase land. I'm really confused.
